Green Tea Houjini

Our Green Tea Houjini is a traditional roasted green tea with sweet nutty toasty notes

Tea/Origin: Roasted Bancha (Houjicha) | Japan (Aichi Prefecture)

nut, gluten and dairy free

Caffeine level: ●○○

Houjini has long been a favorite of ours, somehow this green tea defies all logic, with it's toasty rich notes.

You'll notice right away, this doesn't look like a typical Green tea. Traditionally known as Houjicha, this tea is made from the tea leaves just under the top leaves of the tea plant, closer to the stalk (also known as bancha). Houjicha goes through the same Japanese process of first steaming the leaves after picking (this stops oxidation), however the extra step of roasting is what makes this tea so special!

The leaves are roasted at high heat after being rolled and dried, imparting a smoky and toasty flavor on the leaves, and also lowering the caffeine content.

We think you'll love this for it's toasty, warming and nutty notes! Experiment with steeping this tea for less than 2 min, and more infusions if you enjoy a lighter cup.

How to Prepare:

Mug (8oz water): 2 level tsp • 175º • Steep for 3 min.

Teapot: (8oz water): 2.5 level tsp • 175º • Steep for 2 min.

Resteep: 1 time for 3 min.

Add: nothing

Covered teapots retain more heat, therefore the Teapot method requires less time for steeping.

Add more tea to your taste to make the tea richer or stronger, rather than leaving the tea to steep longer than directed.

Great as Iced Tea!

No Artificial Flavors.
No tea dust.
High quality ingredients.

Nutty, smokey, and utterly delightful!

I had never tried anything quite like this tea before. I received it in one of my subscription boxes. I don't recall which box it came with, I have multiple subscriptions. This is a tea that everyone who I shared it with, loved it! My parents loved it, my husband, and my husband's guests. It's a delightful tea and now that I've run out, I'm getting another big bag! I have a massive tea collection, and I drink enough that I really do go through it all... or ... I do in theory ;) What can I say? Some women shop for shoes... I collect teas and teacups. This is by far my favorite company and I have probably purchased 3/4ths of their teas by now. This particular tea, I would put in my top fifteen for sure. Maybe even top ten! I spend all day writing and drinking tea. What can I say? It's part of my process.

Woodsy & mild

A very light-brewing tea with woody/planty notes. Nice, but I prefer a stronger brew.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for your review! If you'd like more flavor, try adding .5 tsp more to the steep, instead of steeping for longer. You'll add more flavor, without the possibility of oversteeping the tea. Try it out, and let us know! cheers, the team at Field to Cup
